Dental Health

Why is dental health important in the workplace?

Good oral health is beneficial to both the employee and employer. A worker with good dental health has better attendance and work productivity. Poor oral health can result in unplanned dental visits, pain, lost wages, missed work days and missed deadlines. An employee or employer with good oral health is a positive role model for clients and co-workers. A healthy smile makes a long lasting impression that can help you succeed in your position.

How can you improve your dental health while at work?

Improving your dental health at work is very simple! Making minor changes to your diet and routine can make a big difference in your dental and overall health.

Healthy Snacks
  • Limit the frequency and amount of sugar you eat. Each time your teeth contact sugar, the risk of dental decay increases.
  • If you drink be verages throughout the work day, consider drinking water. Drinking tap water has positive benefits for both your dental health and your overall health, especially if the water supply is fluoridated.
  • Beverages containing sugar (pop, juice, coffee, etc.) create an acid in your mouth that breaks down the outer enamel surface of your teeth. This can result in cavities and sensitivity.
  • Avoid eating snacks that are sticky, soft or high in carbohydrates. Eating crunchy foods, such as vegetables and fruit, help remove plaque that contains bacteria that causes damage to our teeth and gums.
Oral Hygiene
  • The best way to improve your oral hygiene is to brush and floss after your coffee or lunch breaks. If this is not common in your workplace, lead by example and you may start a healthy new trend!
  • If you’re in a rush and don’t have time to brush after coffee break, try chewing sugar-free gum, rinsing with water, or eating a piece of cheese. These will help reduce the acid level in your mouth.
  • Promote interoffice activities during dental health month in April! Try having a competition to see who can floss and brush the most at work.
