If your workplace is holding a special event for the public, you may need to apply for a Special Occasion Food Permit.
A Special Occasion Food Permit is an application that must be completed by an event sponsor for a special occasion event where potentially hazardous foods will be sold or served to the public.The application should be submitted at least 7 days prior to the event and must be approved by a Public Health Inspector at the Northwestern Health Unit. There is no fee required to submit an application. Contact a Public Health Inspector at your local Northwestern Health Unit.
What types of events require a Special Occasion Food Permit?
- Barbecues that are open to the public
- Community fundraisers where food is served to the public
- Food booths at fairs or feestivals
- Other community events such as: fish frys, pancake breakfasts, pig roasts, spaghetti suppers, steak or seafood dinners
- Food Booth at a farmer's market (other than those selling strictly baked goods or vegetables)
What types of events do not require a Special Occasion Food Permit?
- Private events with invited guests
- Private events catered by approved caterers
- Weddings, socials or funerals
- Teas and bake sales
- Events held by religious organizations
